Historical curiosity of Rua dos Douradores

As in most medieval cities, craftsmen tended to organize themselves accordingly to their craftmanship in a given street or area of their city, even starting their own guild and ending up naming the street after their craft… and Lisbon was no different.

Rua Nova dos Douradores (now Rua dos Douradores) was the ancient street where gilders (craftsmen specialized in gilding, the art of applying a very thin coating of gold to a common material or object, such as wooden frames, books or ceramics) were gathered, as well as tinsmiths. In fact, “douradores” is the portuguese word for “gilders”.

After Lisbon’s great earthquake in 1755, the city’s downtown was rebuilt from scratch but the streets ancient names were kept as reference to the past.
