Cidadela de Cascais

Cascais Area

On the right bank of the Tagus River, it’s a fortified complex comprising the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Luz and Santo António Tower. The set had a defense function of that part of the coast with access to the capital, Lisbon.

In 1870, at a time when Cascais had lost its strategic importance in the defense of the coast of Lisbon, Don Luis, (reign: 1861-1889), adapted the former home of the governor of the Citadel to a holiday residence, freeing its military function.

With its opening to the public on November 2011, Cascais now has a cultural space of reference in which it is expected to present a regular schedule of guided tours and temporary exhibitions and initiatives such as conferences, seminars and book launches.
