Lady of the Mount viewpoint / Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Lisbon City Center - Downtown Area

Lady of the Mount viewpoint, is in São Vicente (Graça district), in what was called Monte de São Gens in Lisbon. The first hermitage that existed near this place was built in 1147 after the reconquest of Lisbon. It was dedicated to St. Gens Lisbon who had been bishop of the city long before the reconquest and it would have been martyred on this site. The Augustinian friars, who took over the hermitage, placed inside the stone chair that belonged to the saint. Around this chair emerged a legend according to which pregnant ladies to sit there, had uncomplicated births. The woman herself D. João V, D. Maria Anna of Austria, was there to sit when she was pregnant of the heir to the throne.

After the earthquake of 1755, which was devastating to the surrounding area, the hermitage was practically destroyed. The current chapel was built in 1796, a location a little above the original site and is the architect Honorato José Teixeira work. Inside was again placed the chair of St. Gens. In 1921, the Augustinian friars of Grace were transferred from the shrine to the Convent of Our Lady of Grace. Next to the chapel there is the Lady of Mount Lookout Point, with a beautiful view over the Castle of São Jorge and downtown Lisbon.
